This Vocational Rehab Counselor will commute to our Wheeling DayRehab Center and Northbrook DayRehab Center.

Wheeling DayRehab Center: 5150 Capitol Drive, Wheeling
Northbrook DayRehab Center: 755 Skokie Blvd., Northbrook (relocating to 2591 Compass Rd., Glenview) 

General Summary

The Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor will evaluate patient's potential for employment or training.  Interviews, counsels and administers vocational evaluation tests to patients.  Coordinates monitors and assess patient's progress through Vocational Rehabilitation process.  Develops vocational and educational goals suitable to patient's needs.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Manages cases, reports and documentation of assigned patients which includes interviewing, counseling, evaluating and assisting with placement of patients in helping them adjust to a new and productive lifestyle.
  2. Establishes and facilitates completion of patient vocational rehabilitation objectives and coordinates patient progress through vocational rehabilitation process by counseling and evaluating patient progress.
  3. Evaluates patient vocational abilities and potentials by administering, scoring, interpreting and reporting selected vocational evaluations, situational assessments, return to work plans and job site evaluations.
  4. Interviews patients, monitors emotional and physical adjustment to disability and provides counseling regarding vocational and educational alternatives.
  5. Develops reports that provide information on patient progress in vocational services for physicians and medical team, medical records, insurance companies, government agencies, and DORS.
  6. Participates in weekly department meetings and monthly vocational rounds.
  7. Assists in patient placement process, recommends placement objectives and educates clients regarding job seeking skills, resume writing and interviewing techniques.
  8. Remains current and makes suggestions to supervisor regarding up-to-date testing materials and counseling techniques and processes.
  9. Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to the Manager, Vocational Rehabilitation

Job Requirements

  1. Requires knowledge of personality, career development, counseling, testing and sampling techniques normally acquired through completion of a Master's degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling, Vocational Evaluation or related field. Master's program typically includes an internship of ten to eighteen weeks.
  2. Certification as a Rehabilitation Counselor by the Commission on Rehabilitation Certification required.
  3. CPR certification required.
  4. Work requires an understanding of counseling techniques, knowledge of vocational materials, equipment and resources, which can be gained through one year of related work experience.
  5. Able to meet revenue productivity requirements for a Rehabilitation Specialist as determined by department policy.
  6. Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to effectively communicate with clients, hospital personnel and outside contacts.
  7. Requires analytical abilities in order to effectively interpret test results and prescribe appropriate treatment as well as to assess client's condition and progress.

Working Conditions

  1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
  2. Travel to assigned offsite locations and jobsites as necessary.
