General Summary

The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (SRAlab) is committed to strategic initiatives in which Information Systems will play a pivotal role both in providing systems support and in being an integral part of future services offered to the Institute’s patients and clients. This position leads the SRAlab Information Systems organization, which is responsible for planning and delivering strategic initiatives as well as providing ongoing technical operations support.

The Vice President of Technology (Vice President) is responsible for establishing the vision of the Information Systems department, ensuring it aligns with the organization’s business strategy, and leading the IS organization in the successful delivery of the IS strategy through effective program management. The Vice President is responsible for all operational aspects of the IS department including software development (packaged HIS and custom applications), network support, help desk, telecommunications, and the Program Management Office (PMO). Directs the management and design, installation, modification and operation of the systems function. Prepares long - and short - range plans for application selection, software systems development, systems maintenance, production activities, and for necessary support resources. Develops structure for ensuring excellent development and management of the function.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Develops Systems Information vision, goals and objectives:
  • Collaborates with SRAlab executive leadership to ensure that IS strategy aligns with the organization’s business strategy and is successful in its delivery through effective program management;
  • Maintains Information Systems multi-year roadmap;
  • Ensures necessary systems support for accomplishment of SRAlab strategic, tactical and operational goals;
  • Collaborates with senior staff to provide necessary information systems in support of their strategic initiatives;
  • Collaborates with Administrative and Clinical leadership to widen perspective of the role IS can play in providing clinical, operational and administrative services and ensures strategies and processes are consistent with the development of state-of-the-art practices.
  • Plans and oversees the IS organization’s budget, according to the approved Strategic Plan and operational budgetary guidelines:
  • Develops annual expense, capital and FTE budgets;
  • Monitors and manages IS budget;
  • Identifies and prioritizes capital investments;
  • Approves PC and other technology-related expenditures of all departments to assure; maximum efficiencies and minimal duplication of resources.
  • Directs work of Information Systems Staff to deliver strategic initiatives and to provide a stable technical environment:
  • Establishes quantifiable goals and objectives for IS staff;
  • Ensures Information Systems are aligned with ongoing operations;
  • Assures that state-of-the-art information systems are available to all operating areas of SRAlab;
  • Exceeds customer expectations by providing necessary support to all operating areas;
  • Evaluates and re-directs (as appropriate) system application plans in each area;
  • Develops processes and oversight to ensure that all information systems within SRAlab are of the highest professional and efficacy level given current systems tools.
  • Keeps abreast of emerging technology and effectively deploys leading-edge applications:
  • Encourages development of new applications at SRAlab utilizing state-of-the-art systems approaches and advances;
  • Responsible for Cyber Security, protecting computers, networks, programs and data from unintended or unauthorized access, change or destruction.
  • Collaborates and networks with management throughout SRAlab to enhance services offered through systems approaches.
  • Performs duties of HIPAA Security Officer, accountable for protecting the privacy of individual’s healthcare information: 
  • Develops and maintains the HIPAA Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan.
  • Ensures the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the e-PHI created, received, maintained or transmitted;
  • Identify and protects against reasonably anticipated threats to the security or integrity of the information;
  • Protects against reasonably anticipated, impermissible uses or disclosures; and
  • Ensures compliance by the workforce.
  • Develops cooperative relationships with external organizations
  • Evaluates opportunities to work with external providers of systems expertise and applications;
  • Negotiates contracts with aforementioned, as appropriate.
  • Conducts human resource functions as required:
  • Reviews and revises functional organizational structure to meet changing internal needs;
  • Directs the hiring, orientation, technical skill development, and management of all staff members within the department;
  • Conducts performance reviews.

Reporting Relationships


Reports directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Partners with Chief Data Officer, and Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related discipline
  • Master’s degree in Information Technology, Business Administration or related field, preferred.
  • Must possess extensive knowledge and expertise in running and executing successful projects.
  • Knowledge of business principles, including financial analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to provide effective leadership and communicate effectively within a matrixed environment.
  • 10+ years’ experience with healthcare information technology; a minimum of 8+  years in a leadership role with progressive management responsibility.
  • Possesses excellent leadership skills with strong IT expertise.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interface at all levels throughout the organization.
  • Strong leadership, execution, change management, and team skills with the ability to bring a sense of urgency.
  • The ability to attract, retain, motivate, and engage a diverse team of operational resources.
  • Ability to thrive in a changing environment, deal with ambiguity, and ability to prioritize and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Experience with Cerner desirable.
