General Summary

The CBM Research Prosthetist - Certified or certification pending Prosthetist (CP) will be part of a large, multidisciplinary team performing state-of—the art research. The candidate will provide care to subjects with traumatic, vascular and congenital limb loss at all levels. The candidate will make and monitor research prosthetic devices and systems for SRAlab’s Center for Bionic Medicine (CBM). The CBM is comprised of four integrated laboratories that include a multidisciplinary team of physicians, prosthetists, therapists, engineers, software developers, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students. The CBM focuses on creating clinically viable technologies that advance prosthesis design and control.

Principal Responsibilities

The CPO candidate will:

1. Be responsible for providing the following research activities:

  • Serve on the research team for both upper and lower limb prosthetic projects, screening subjects for participation, performing clinical examinations and coordination with all involved departments.
  • Measure residual limbs and make any needed negative models either by plaster impression or digital shape capture.
  • Specify and order all needed componentry to build research prosthetic devices and systems.
  • Perform all positive model rectification by modifying plaster molds by hand or utilizing CAD shape manipulation software to modify digital models.
  • Formulate design of any prosthesis, including selecting materials, determining the socket construction, choosing components, and optimizing the device alignment.
  • Perform fittings, including static and dynamic trials of devices, and make any necessary alterations or modifications to ensure optimized fit and function for specific research purpose.
  • Instruct subjects in proper prosthesis use, care, safety and precautions, as determined by the research team.
  • Monitor subject progress, measure functional outcome, and maintain patient and laboratory records regarding fittings, design and experiments.
  • Monitor inventory of all required prosthetic research supplies.
  • Actively participate in and support the mentorship and instruction of prosthetic residents as they complete required research elements as need by the NCOPE Residency program
  • Keep Operations Manager and/or Principal investigator(s) abreast of issues related to subject care and operational problems, recommending options for resolution.
  • Assists with development, data collection, analysis and implementation relative to research projects.
  • Assist in preparation of grant proposals, manuscripts for publication, scientific presentations and annual reports. Assist in preparation of applications to the Internal Review Board (IRB) and ensure prosthetic fittings and experiments are performed according to the protocols listed in the appropriate approved projects
  • The laboratory has a strong powered lower limb research program and is moving into powered orthotic research. The candidate will assist in these area as able and appropriate.

2. Keep current and up-to-date regarding new technology in the field of prosthetics.

3. Assist technicians in activities related to the fabrication of prostheses.

4. Successfully complete required environment of care training and information systems training. Use SRAlab's information systems to perform job duties as needed.

5. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the CBM and the SRAlab .

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to CBM Operations Manager.

Job Requirements

  1. Current certification, or pending certification as a Certified Prosthetist by the American Board for Certification in Prosthetics, Orthotics and Pedorthics.
  2. Current or pending Illinois license to practice as a Certified Prosthetist.
  3. Master’s degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics, or completion of an accredited Certificate Program in Prosthetics following a Bachelor of Science in a Human Health Sciences or related field.
  4. Familiarity and experience with a wide range of available prosthetic technology, including myoelectric-controlled upper limb devices and microprocessor-controlled knees.
  5. One or more years of technical experience preferred, including the fabrication, maintenance and repair of prostheses.
  6. Strong analytical ability and problem-solving skills.
  7. Effective verbal and interpersonal skills to communicate with subjects, allied health staff, engineers, technicians, and other departmental colleagues.
  8. Proficient computer skills and familiarity with electronic medical records, specifically minimum proficiency with MS Office products (i.e. Outlook, Excel, etc.) and adequate typing skills.
  9. Ability to get along with others, be a team player and assist in the development of team building.
