General Summary

The Post-Doctoral Fellow, Research is now available in the Applied Research in Muscuoloskeletal Simulation (ARMS) Lab at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (SRAlab). The SRAlab offers a multi-site system of clinical care for musculoskeletal and neurological illnesses, and is closely affiliated with Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The ARMS Lab, directed by Dr. Wendy Murray, is also affiliated with the Edward Hines Jr., VA Hospital in Hines, IL.

Principal Responsibilities

The Post-Doctoral Fellow, Research:

  1. Ensures the design, development, execution and implementation of scientific research and/or development in collaboration with a research team.
  2. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products.
  3. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
  4. Assists with development of collaborative projects within and outside the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and test ideas for new projects development.
  5. Applies for fellowships and grants for external lab funding and career development.
  6. Participates weekly lab meetings, journal clubs and seminars.
  7. Builds and maintains a well-organized and accountable journal of own laboratory protocols, experiments, results and analyses.
  8. Develops, submits and publishes results of research projects scientific journals and presents data to public conferences/seminars when needed.
  9. Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
  10. Will be a part of an interdisciplinary research team engaged in both experimental and computer simulation studies.

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to the assigned Principal Investigator

Job Requirements

  1. Requires the academic knowledge associated with a doctorate degree
  2. Less than 4 years of postdoctoral training.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  4. General knowledge or interest in rehabilitation and specific knowledge in biomedical or clinical principles.
  5. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills needed to participate as a creative member of a growing research team.
  6. Ability to exchange ideas and to work closely with clinicians, patients and professional organizations.
  7. Willingness to network within the Institute and to independently strengthen/develop new external collaborations.
  8. Ability to timely plan and to coordinate project completions.  
  9. Expertise in a field related to clinical musculoskeletal biomechanics, such as engineering or kinesiology.
  10. Prior experience with EMG data collection and quantitative motion analysis of the upper limb and/or hand is required.
  11. Candidates with a demonstrated capacity for biomechanical modeling and simulation will be preferred.

Working Conditions

  1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
