Job Description

General Summary 

The Nursing Supervisor has primary responsibility for implementing the mission, vision, policies, goals and objectives of the organization and the nursing services throughout the inpatient area.  Promotes organizational goals, interdisciplinary and interdepartmental team collaboration.  Allocates fiscal and human resources appropriately to ensure the delivery of quality cost efficient care.  Oversees the safe, human and individualized delivery of quality patient care to patients from admission to discharge.  Assists with the direction, supervision and evaluation of nursing activities across multiple units and collaborates with other disciplines to guarantee continuity and quality of care

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Commits to and attains high standards of excellence and innovation.

  3. Directs, supervises and monitors appropriate staffing/productivity of assigned staff.
  4. Develops and optimizes the performance of team members, resulting in goal attainment, staff motivation and talent retention.
  5. Oversees orientation, training and professional growth and development needs of staff in conjunction with Nurse Manager.
  6. Establishes, builds, and sustains effective professional relationships.
  7. Communicates effectively with patients, families and staff to ensure a high level of satisfaction and to prevent and resolve conflict in a timely manner using sound customer service principles.
  8. Effectively leads teams and individuals to ensure execution of goals and projects.
  9. Pursues learning to continuously improve one’s own leadership skills, shares knowledge liberally and acknowledges own development needs.
  10. Demonstrates and effectively applies expertise in field of specialization including the technical and job specific skills required to fulfill job responsibilities.
  11. Ensures compliance with regulatory agency standards.
  12. Ensures that timely and high quality documentation is available for all patients and compliance with documentation standards are adhered to (i.e. restraint, pt. education, pain). 
  13. Maintains environment of care through personal and staff compliance with policies and procedures.
  14. Facilitates smooth and orderly admissions and patient screening processes.
  15. Performs direct patient care responsibilities as needed.
  16. Participates in quality monitoring or improvement activities at the unit or organizational level.
  17. Demonstrates the ability to interpret growth and development related information to assure patient needs are met.
  18. Practices in accordance with professional practice standards and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  19. Participates in professional development activities such as education programs, nursing committees and professional organizations that promote the improvement of nursing care and advance the profession of rehabilitation nursing.
  20. Promotes and utilizes evidence based practice to enhance rehabilitation nursing practice.

  1. Director, Nursing
  2. Indirectly reports to Nurse Manager

Job Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree from accredited nursing program required.  Master’s degree, preferred.
  2. Current CPR certification required including ACLS certification.
  3. Professional knowledge of practice and supervision, a level generally acquired through a Bachelor's degree from an approved school of nursing.
  4. Communicates effectively using timely verbal, non-verbal and written communication to provide leadership, instruct patients/families/staff and to work cooperatively with other health care team members and to ensure fulfillment of requirements for legal documentation and reimbursement.
  5. Possesses the specialized knowledge and clinical skills necessary to oversee the care provided for people with physical disability and chronic illness.
  6. Consistently does whatever it takes to ensure individual, departmental/team and organizational excellence.
  7. Willingly adapts to changing work demands and work environment.
  8. Demonstrates critical thinking skills and makes sound judgments to monitor and respond to patient and staff needs changes in condition.
  9. Anticipates assesses and addresses the needs of patients, internal and external customers to positively influence the patient/customer experience (directly or indirectly). Ability to transfer and position patients.

Working Conditions

  1. Normal patient care environment with little or no exposure to dust, noise or extreme temperature.
  2. Exposure to moderately adverse working conditions in performing certain patient care activities.
  3. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients
