General Summary

The Manager, Grant Management (MGM) will oversee the administration of extramural support for SRAlab’s scientific and clinical research activities. The MGM, working under the leadership of the VP, Chief of Research Operations, uses research administration experience to direct and oversee the negotiation of research projects to ensure proper administration of SRAlab’s sponsored research activity. The MGM, as an Authorized Signing Official, will manage specific grant submissions, awards, funding agency information, and work with MRDS to prepare annual, quarterly, and monthly reports as needed. Additional responsibilities include working on new research administration projects with federal government and other sponsors. The MGM will also perform Research Administrator duties as needed and required.

Principal Responsibilities



The Manager, Grant Management:

  1. Manages workload, determines work priority, assigns duties of department Research Administrators, and participates in professional duties of the Office of Research Administration.
  2. Provides oversight of Research Administrators, managing gifts, grants and contracts, and assisting Principal Investigators.
  3. Assists Research Administrators in reviewing and implementing sponsor guidelines and works with their Principal Investigators to provide timely information.
  4. Works with Manager, Research Data and Systems (“MRDS”) to establish and implement procedures that improve overall efficiency of the Office of Research Administration.
  5. Manages pre-award processes to ensure timely and correct submission of proposals, and works with MRDS to ensure accurate proposal and award data is entered into research systems.
  6. Works with MRDS to develop and maintain standard work papers and processes for consistent management of awards and maintenance of projections.
  7. Ensure that all Research Administrators are trained in processes such as proposals to a variety of sponsors, regulations and feasability for multiple award types and all required reporting.
  8. Manages the overall post-award financial compliance of accounts throughout the budget/project period and works with MRDS to maintain complete and accurate files on all awards.  Reviews records with MRDS to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  9. Works with Executive Director, Center for Advance Clinical Trial Research to provide support for Industry-Sponsored Clinical Trials, creating budgets and ensuring that sponsors are billed correctly and appropriately.
  10. With MRDS, liaison to Financial Departments including Finance, Accounts Payable and Payroll, and Purchasing to ensure proper processing and documentation of grant expenditures.
  11. Oversees the timely closeout of awards according to institution policy and good accounting practices.
  12. Mentors and trains Research Administrators, and prepares work schedules and assigns duties to Research Administration personnel to ensure efficient operation of department. 
  13. Works with MRDS and Chief of Research Operations & Vice President to develop and revise policies and procedures regarding pre and post-award research administration.
  14. Participates in the evaluation, selection and implementation of new technology and systems to support and improve research administration operations.
  15. Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to the VP, Chief of Research Operations

Job Requirements

  1. BA/BS degree with a minimum of 7 years of experience in sponsored program and Industry-Sponsored Clinical Trial compliance/administration.
  2. Minimum of 3 years of experience effectively leading Research Administration teams.
  3. Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects/tasks simultaneously.
  4. Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization
  5. Must have a high degree of organizational skill to manage a large, growing research program.
  6. Understand and be able to manage complex effort scenarios resulting from multiple appointment types.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in federal, state, and private funding sources.
  8. Knowledge of computer hardware and software, including communications, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, and graphics.
  9. Excellent organizational and time management skills
  10. Ability to work independently with a considerable amount of latitude for independent judgment and initiatives

  1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
