Job Description

General Summary 

The primary responsibility of a Laboratory Technician is to perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.  Laboratory Technician provides required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively while adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

The Laboratory Technician must consistently demonstrate support of the SRAlab statement of Mission and Philosophy by striving for excellence, contributing to the team efforts and showing respect and compassion for patients and their families, fellow employees, and all others with whom there is contact at or in the interest of the institute.

Principal Responsibilities


  1. Perform specimen collection using appropriate, established procedures according to department protocol.  Procedures may include venipuncture & capillary draws, blood cultures, heel or finger sticks, and special techniques for difficult or geriatric patients.
  2. Efficiently label and process specimens according to established policy and procedures.  Work closely with laboratory users to verify patient orders, collections, and results.
  3. Register patient demographics and insurance information into the Hospital Information System (HIS) and the Laboratory Information System (LIS) including test orders and accurate ICD-9 coding.
  4. Accurate use of HIS and LIS for the verification of sample receipt, result inquiry, data collection and reporting.
  5. Complete (charge) or cancel/discharge (credit) specimens in LIS to ensure accurate and compliant billing.
  6. Review pending logs and interface transaction monitor to ensure results are populating patients’ medical records in Power Chart.
  7. Distribute laboratory reports to physician’s inboxes and offices including faxing and retrieval of test results from SRAlab and/or NMH databases.  Accurately reprint results and forward to medical records for scanning into patient’s chart.
  8. Document all notifications and chart appropriate data to the patient’s medical record per department specific criteria.
  9. Employees are required to handle and dispose of potentially hazardous material.
  10. Follow all infection control policies, especially when drawing patients in isolation.
  11. Maintain safe and clean work environment by utilizing personal protective equipment and safety devices appropriately.
  12. Participate in Safety and Infection Control activities.
  13. Stock and monitor inventory of laboratory supplies and promptly notify management of shortages.

 Reporting Relationships

  1.  Reports to the Manager, Diagnostic Services

Job Requirements

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Certification from an accredited medical phlebotomy program, medical assistant program or equivalent required.
  3. Prior work experience in pathology, laboratory support or health-related experience.
  4. Familiarly with medical terminology, billing and coding preferred.
  5. Experience with Cerner Healthcare Information system a plus.
  6. Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients and customers in various circumstances.
  7. Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting in order to maximize quality and efficiently of operations.

Working Conditions

  1. Normal patient care environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
  2. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.
