Job Description

The Human Resources Generalist collaborates with department and clinical operating group managers, supervisors and staff members throughout the system of care on general human resources topics.

The Human Resources Generalist advises and counsels employees, supervisors and managers on the human resource implications of business decisions. The Human Resources Generalist relies on strategic thinking and knowledge in the following areas: organizational dynamics and structure; staffing and recruiting tactics; training and facilitation; employee rewards and recognition; change and culture management including team building; employee relationship and communication management; employee relations and performance and talent management.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Provides feedback to managers regarding existing human resource issues and concerns and works with the manager to identify potential solutions. Discourages bureaucratic, overly formal responses to human resource concerns or issues.
  2. Responds to employee questions and concerns as needed. Exercises knowledge of HR policies and procedures to help resolve employee concerns and questions either directly or by referring the individual to the appropriate HR contact.
  3. Participates in counseling/investigations regarding escalated employee concerns and issues as appropriate.
  4. Participates in the New Employee Orientation process, facilitating, helping to organize, etc.
  5. May facilitate ongoing training sessions on a variety of HR related topics.
  6. Partners with appropriate individuals/departments in the organization of Institute-wide events and employee activities.  
  7. Participates in, and may manage, HR related projects and initiatives as the need arises, i.e. recruitment initiatives, performance management, employee events, etc.
  8. Monitors and collects documents to ensure compliance to relevant company policies and legal requirements and may conduct audits as appropriate. Collaborates with appropriate functions throughout the organization to ensure adherence to various compliance standards and requirements.
  9. Promotes an appreciation of and sensitivity to, the diversity of individuals involved in situations and how that diversity may affect behavior.
  10. Performs job responsibilities in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
  11. Establishes and meets deadlines while managing multiple priorities.
  12. Makes effective and timely decisions within range of authority, even when data is limited or solutions produce unpleasant personal or interpersonal consequences. Escalates and/or seeks advice when appropriate.
  1. Markets HR within SRALAB by: units throughout the organization and showing responsiveness in all interactions.
  2. Becoming market-driven by addressing genuine, internal human resource program needs and issues consistent with organizational mandates and direction.
  3. Gaining the trust and respect of others by being open and candid about opinions and attitudes, keeping sensitive organizational and employee information confidential, behaving in a fair and ethical manner toward others, and demonstrating a sense of institutional responsibility.
  1. Provides input to various human resource programs and practices to determine their value-added contributions for enhancing the mission, assets and the business of SRALAB for its patients and patient families.
  2. Establishes and meets deadlines while managing multiple priorities.
  3. Makes effective and timely decisions within range of authority, even when data is limited or solutions produce unpleasant personal or interpersonal consequences. Escalates and/or seeks advice when appropriate.
  4. Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to Director, Human Resources

Job Requirements

  1. Education level appropriate with what is normally gained through the acquisition of a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related filed. SHRM certification preferred.
  2. Minimum of 2 years of experience with knowledge of employee relations and continues developing professional expertise in other HR functions.
  3. Able to use professional concepts and apply company policies/procedures to work on problems/issues of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
  4. Demonstrated experience and ability to recommend and advocate for appropriate human resource decisions with internal and external clients within defined procedures and practices.
  5. Must adjust rapidly to new situations warranting attention and resolution.
  6. Demonstrates good judgment in identifying situations requiring negotiations and problem solving.
  7. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, active listening and persuasive negotiation skills and diplomacy with all levels of an organization.
  8. Must possess excellent analytical and planning skills.
  9. Demonstrates effective presentation and facilitation skills.
  10. Demonstrates group cohesiveness and collaborates well with others.

Working Conditions

  1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
