General Summary

The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Caring for Kids Program has an opening for a contract Therapeutic Dance/Movement instructor to lead a weekly one-hour adaptive dance class from 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM on Saturdays at the Menomonee Club Drucker Center located in Chicago.

The Therapeutic Dance/Movement Instructor will develop and lead dance lesson plans for participants ages 7-17 with medical complexity and/or physical disability and will work together with the Caring for Kids Program Specialist to achieve program goals and objectives.

The Therapeutic Dance/Movement Instructor will demonstrate Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Core Attributes: Communication, Accountability, Flexibility/Adaptability, Judgment/Problem Solving, Customer Service and Values (Hope, Compassion, Discovery, Collaboration, & Commitment to Excellence) while fulfilling job duties.

The Shirley Ryan Ability Caring for Kids Program is a dynamic program for youth aged 7-17 who are diagnosed with a primary physical disability. The Caring for Kids program offers year-round adaptive sports, recreation, special events, and social activities. The programs are designed to foster a positive quality of life for participants through promoting physical fitness, independence, socialization, cultural activity, and adaptive programming resources.

Principal Responsibilities



The Therapeutic Dance/Movement Instructor will:

  1. Lead assigned groups for Dance/Movement Therapy for 3:30PM – 4:30PM on Saturdays.
  2. Maintain cleanliness and safety of dance/movement therapy area and music materials
  3. Follow current model of dance class structure.
  4. Timely documentation as requested by Caring for Kids Program Specialist including reporting attendance and providing an invoice.
  5. Communicate any issues, concerns or successes to Caring for Kids Program Specialist.
  6. Provide volunteers, as needed with assistance from Caring for Kids Program Specialist.
  7. As a contracted instructor, complete an online orientation and background check.

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports to the Caring for Kids Program Specialist

Job Requirements

    1. Must be a Registered-Dance/Movement Therapist (R-DMT).
    2. BLS and First Aid certification.
    3. Strong teaching and presentation skills.
    4. Experience in special populations preferred.
    5. Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with internal/external customers.
    6. Demonstrated critical thinking skills and ability to make sound judgment to monitor and respond to participant needs.
    7. Ability to anticipate, assess and address the needs of participants to positively influence the participant experience (directly or indirectly).
