Job Description

General Summary 


Assesses and treats patients with physical disability due to traumatic injuries or illnesses to assist patients in dealing with emotional reaction to their disability.  In doing so, obtains patient case history, conducts initial psychological assessment and interprets scored psychological tests to diagnose disorders and formulate treatment plans.  Monitors patient progress revising treatment plans necessary.

Principal Responsibilities


  1. Interviews patients, families and other appropriate personnel to obtain information regarding patient's personal, medical and mental history.
  2. Selects and, after tests are administered and scored by technicians, interprets intelligence, interest, personality and other psychological tests to diagnose disorders and formulate treatment plan.
  3. Plans frequency, duration and intensity of therapy and conducts a variety of directive, nondirective and supportive therapy on an individual and/or group basis.  Provides patient care that is appropriate for the age and development of the patient.  Demonstrates competency in understanding the growth and development of infant, child, adult and geriatric patients as measured by specific performance standards and as described by department/unit policies and procedures.  Demonstrates the ability to interpret growth and development related information to assure patient needs are met.
  4. Monitors patient's progress,  re-establishes goals and revises treatment plans as necessary.  Alerts appropriate treatment team members to changes in patients' conditions.
  5. Consults with treatment teams regarding psychological and neuropsychological factors that would affect implementation of rehabilitation programs and patient-therapist relationships.
  6. Maintains appropriate documentation for review, for charging of services and to meet departmental and Institute documentation requirements.  Provides discharge planning and follow-up services including referral and liaison to patients and families.  Prepares discharge summary.
  7. Keeps informed of developments in field to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
  8. Successfully completes environment of care training and RICIS training.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES


  1. Teaches courses and lectures in the Medical School regarding psychological and neuropsychological aspects of rehabilitation.  Participates in and conducts department in-service programs.  Serves as faculty member in the Northwestern School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.
  2. Participates in research activities.

Reporting Relationships 


  1. Reports to Administrative Director. 
  2. For Psychologists in the Early Intervention Program, A second reporting relationship may be to the Early Intervention Program Manager.

Job Requirements


  1. Current licensure by State of Illinois required.
  2. Knowledge of psychological principles, development, inter relational dynamics, individual and group behavior and behavior modification techniques as normally acquired through completion of PhD or Psy.D.  from an accredited school of psychology and successful completion of a clinical internship.
  3. Approximately two to three years of progressively more responsible related work experience necessary to gain a comprehensive understanding of neuropsychological assessment, psychotherapeutic techniques, treatment modalities and individual and group therapy.
  4. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and families in providing therapy and with physicians and team members in gathering and exchanging patient information.
  5. Analytical skills to select and interpret psychological tests, asses patient disorders and formulate treatment plans.
  6. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when providing therapy and observing patient responses.

For Psychologists in the Early Intervention Program:


Demonstration of current and in-depth knowledge of general child development and health and recognizes various and/or abnormalities of:

a)       Common pediatric illnesses, both acute and chronic;

b)       Accidental injury (vs) suspected child abuse/neglect;

c)       Growth and development; and

d)       Common pediatric disabilities.


 Working Conditions 


  1. Normal patient care environment with little or no exposure to dust, noise or extreme temperature.
  2. Exposure to moderately adverse working conditions in performing certain patient care activities.
  3. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.
