Job Description

General Summary

The Inpatient Coder will code and enter diagnoses and procedures for admission claims and discharged inpatient medical records.

Principal Responsibilities

The Inpatient Coder:

  1. Codes and enters diagnoses and procedures for discharged inpatient medical records within appropriate timeframes to meet timely billing requirements.
  2. Codes and enters diagnoses and procedures for admission (interim) claims within appropriate timeframes to meet timely billing requirements.
  3. Answers questions pertinent to ICD-10 guidelines.
  4. Codes outpatient records as needed.
  5. Assists with any coding or compliance audits, as needed.
  6. Participates in communication and education with medical staff concerning documentation issues to support accurate coding and billing.
  7. Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to Director, Health Information Management

Job Requirements

  1. 1-2 Years of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding experience and clinical knowledge.
  2. Knowledge of regulatory, billing, and other coding guidelines.
  3. RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P certification required, and maintains continuing education requirements.
  4. Previous inpatient rehabilitation coding experience and familiarity with IRF-PAI and IGC.
  5. Advanced computer skills, PC-experience with Windows based applications. Experience with hospital information systems and encoder experience preferred.
  6. Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with other departments, physicians, and key customers.

Working Conditions

  1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
  2. Remote coding possibilities after meeting and maintaining productivity standards as well as following employee conduct guidelines.
